We get to Hampi before the sun has had a chance to warm the air, and with just that right bit of golden light bouncing off boulders. We freshen up and fuel up with local breakfast before entering into the core of the UNESCO World Heritage site. Starting out from the temple complex of Vitthala, you gaze at the Stone Chariot in astonishment, admire the musical pillars and let it sink to your nerves that, these architects are missing in today’s generations. We’ll continue on to the magnificent Ugra Narasimha monolith and its neighbor, Badavilinga, before strolling to the Royal Center with its elegant Indo-Islamic Lotus Mahal and grand Elephant Stables. Following a rest for lunch at one of Hampi’s charming local cafes we press on to witness the timeless ruins and streets of this forgotten empire. As the sun sets we will hike up Matanga Hill for a relatively easy climb that offers the most iconic view in Hampi—a sweeping 360-degree panorama of the ruins and river as they glow in golden twilight. We finish at our lodge, enjoy a good dinner and go to bed.

Wake up to the rough beauty of what the river left behind for another day, pure adventure. Post breakfast, we gear ourselves up for a pro session of bouldering and test our grip and balance levels on the world-famous granite rocks that make Hampi an international climbing destination. After a lunch that you are invited to sponsor, we visit the oldest sites, such as Anegundi Fort. We spend the afternoon at the serene Sanapur Lake, a turquoise oasis nestled between huge hills. If you have a little bit more time, you can take an authentic coracle ride along the rocky canyons for a distinct view of the countryside. We forego the typical tourist sites and go on a quirky little sunset trek outside of town, away from rigs, savouring the quiet beauty of the valley. We hike back to our camp for dinner and a night enjoying the company of each other under the stars before we retire to our tents.

The heritage trail carries on at Pattadakal, a UNESCO site that offers blueprints of the experimental nature of Indian temple architecture, and if time allows - we visit the ancient structures in Aihole.
