About The Trip

Set off from Bangalore on a journey that brings together some of the best experiences across Goa and Gokarna — from trekking through the Western Ghats and chasing waterfalls to exploring beaches, forts and quiet backwaters.

The trip begins with the Dudhsagar Falls Trek, where you’ll make your way through lush forest trails to one of Goa’s most iconic waterfalls. After the adventure at Dudhsagar, slow things down in South Goa with visits to Cabo de Rama Fort, Palolem Beach and the black-sand Tilmati Beach.

From Goa, the journey continues along the coast to Gokarna, where temple streets and laid-back beaches offer a completely different vibe. Visit the Gokarna Temple and Om Beach, with an optional stop at Mirjan Fort along the way.

The final experience takes you to Honnavar, where you’ll end the trip with a sunset boat ride through its scenic backwaters before beginning the journey back to Bangalore.

A great long-weekend escape for anyone who wants a little bit of everything — a waterfall trek, Goa’s quieter beaches, Gokarna’s coastline and a beautiful backwater sunset, all packed into one road trip.

Detail Itinerary

Details

Your Dudhsagar Falls Trek, South Goa and Gokarna trip from Bangalore begins at 5:00 PM as we depart from the city in an AC Deluxe Tempo Traveller. This multi-day road trip takes you from Karnataka towards Goa and eventually down the Konkan coast to Gokarna and Honnavar, bringing together trekking, beaches, heritage and backwaters in one journey.

The drive towards the Dudhsagar region sets the tone for the adventure ahead as the urban landscape gradually gives way to the greener countryside of the Western Ghats. There will be necessary meal and refreshment stops during the journey before we make our way towards the Dudhsagar region.

Details

The first major experience of the trip is the Dudhsagar Falls Trek, one of the most sought-after waterfall experiences in Goa. After reaching the region, freshen up and have breakfast before getting ready for the trek.

Dudhsagar literally translates to "Sea of Milk", a name inspired by the appearance of the enormous volume of white water cascading down the rocky mountainside. Located on the Mandovi River, the waterfall drops from a height of approximately 310 metres, making it one of India's tallest waterfalls. Surrounded by the forests of the Western Ghats, Dudhsagar becomes particularly dramatic during and immediately after the monsoon.

Accompanied by a local guide and the Plan The Unplanned Trek Leader, begin the trek towards Dudhsagar Falls. The journey takes you through the green landscapes surrounding the falls, offering a completely different side of Goa from its better-known beaches and nightlife.

On reaching Dudhsagar Waterfalls, spend time experiencing the scale of the falls and the surrounding Western Ghats landscape. After sufficient time at the waterfall, begin the hike back towards the starting point.

Following the trek, return to the accommodation and freshen up after an active day. Dinner will be served at the stay, followed by a well-earned night's rest near Dudhsagar.

Details

Wake up, freshen up and enjoy breakfast before checking out and continuing towards South Goa. While North Goa is better known for its nightlife and busy tourist stretches, South Goa offers a slower coastal experience with dramatic cliffs, historic landmarks and scenic beaches.

The first stop is Cabo de Rama Fort, one of South Goa's most fascinating historical landmarks. Perched on a headland overlooking the Arabian Sea, the fort has witnessed different periods of Goan history and was eventually occupied and strengthened by the Portuguese. Local tradition also associates the area with the Ramayana and Lord Rama, from which the fort derives its present name. Today, its old fortifications and sweeping sea views make Cabo de Rama an impressive stop on the South Goa coastline.

Continue onwards to Palolem Beach, famous for its naturally curved shoreline fringed by coconut palms. Located in Canacona in South Goa, Palolem has developed into one of the region's best-known beaches while retaining a noticeably more relaxed atmosphere than Goa's busier northern beaches. Spend some time exploring the beach before heading for a self-sponsored lunch.

The journey then takes you towards Tilmati Beach, a small and unusual stretch of coastline near the Goa-Karnataka border. Unlike the golden and pale sandy beaches typically associated with Goa, Tilmati is known for its distinctive dark shoreline, created by weathered basaltic rock material. Reaching this lesser-known coastal spot adds an offbeat element to the journey before we leave Goa behind.

From Tilmati, continue south towards Gokarna in Karnataka. If time permits, visit Kudle Beach, a scenic crescent-shaped beach surrounded by hills and one of Gokarna's best-known coastal spots.

Later, check into the accommodation in Gokarna. Dinner for the evening is self-sponsored, giving you the flexibility to explore local cafés or restaurants before retiring for the night.

Details

After breakfast, begin exploring Gokarna, a town where centuries-old religious traditions coexist with a laid-back beach culture. Long before Gokarna became popular among backpackers and beach travellers, it was an important pilgrimage town on Karnataka's coast.

Begin with a visit to the Gokarna Temple area, which represents the spiritual heart of the town. Gokarna has strong connections with Hindu mythology, and the town is particularly associated with Lord Shiva. The Mahabaleshwar Temple is its best-known religious landmark and is home to the revered Atmalinga. The narrow streets, temple surroundings and traditional character offer a sharp contrast to the beach landscapes that follow.

Continue towards Om Beach, perhaps the most recognisable beach in Gokarna. The beach gets its name from its distinctive shoreline, whose two adjoining curves resemble the sacred 'Om' symbol when viewed from above. Surrounded by rocky headlands and the Arabian Sea, Om Beach has become one of the defining images of Gokarna.

After spending time at the beach, stop for a self-sponsored lunch before continuing the journey.

Depending on the time available, the itinerary may include an optional visit to Mirjan Fort. Located near the banks of the Aghanashini River, this laterite fort has a history stretching back several centuries and has been associated with regional rulers and the area's historic spice trade. Its high walls, bastions and moss-covered laterite architecture make it one of the more distinctive heritage structures around Gokarna.

The final destination of the trip is Honnavar, a coastal town where rivers, mangroves and the Arabian Sea create an entirely different landscape. Here, board a boat for a sunset ride through the Honnavar backwaters. As the evening light changes, cruise through the calm waterways surrounded by coconut trees, mangroves and the greenery of coastal Karnataka.

Details

Reach Bangalore by approximately 6:00 AM on Monday, bringing an unforgettable journey across Dudhsagar, South Goa, Gokarna and Honnavar to an end.

What began with 11 travellers setting out together ends with shared trails, waterfall moments, long road conversations, beach sunsets and countless stories from the journey. You may have started the trip as strangers, but somewhere between the trails and the coast, you return with new friendships, shared memories and stories worth carrying long after the trip ends.

Because sometimes, the best part of a journey isn't just where you go — it's who you come back with.

  • Meals provided: We offer simple vegetarian meals throughout the trip. Non-vegetarian food will not be provided.

  • Environmental responsibility: We follow a strict Leave No Trace policy in accordance with the rules of the Forest Department. While plastic is not allowed, everyone is expected to carry all waste back to the base and dispose of it responsibly. Together, let’s leave the hills better than we found them.

  • Your personal belongings: You are solely responsible for your personal belongings, valuables, and jewellery. Plan The Unplanned is not liable for any lost or damaged items.

  • Delays and unforeseen events: While we aim to be on schedule, delays may occur due to traffic or vehicular issues beyond our control. We request your cooperation in case of slight delays in reaching our destination.
