About The Trip

While a weekend getaway to Coorg might sound like something too clichéd, you’ll be surprised to know that the region has some amazing trek trails, providing numerous opportunities to travel enthusiasts to explore the entire area surrounded by the Western Ghats. Plan The Unplanned has already taken you up there till Tadiyandamol, Kopatty, Nishani Motte and other places, but now it’s time to head towards another new destination, Kumara Parvatha.

Kumara Parvatha, also popularly known as Pushpagiri (5,624 feet above sea level), is the second-highest mountain in the Western Ghats mountain range, situated in the Kodagu district of Karnataka, after Tadiandamol. If compared to the other treks in this region, Kumara Parvatha is a little tougher, but nonetheless, beautiful. The trekking trail runs through the Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary, and you’ll be getting up close and personal with nature during this journey.

You’ll be exposed to the majestic mountains, the valleys painted with the most amazing shades of green, little brooks and some surprises that nature has to offer en route.

Considered as one of the best treks in India, Kumara Parvatha should be there on your checklist if you are an adventure junkie – dare not to miss it out!

Details

Section 1:  Beedehalli to Kumara Parvatha Peak

Section 2: Kumara Parvatha to Shesha Parvatha

Section 3: Shesha Parvatha to Bhatrumane

Section 4: Bhatrumane to Kukke Subramanya

Kumara Parvatha, situated in the Western Ghats, is one of the most challenging and scenic trekking trails in Karnataka. The trek offers diverse landscapes, stunning views, and a rewarding experience for seasoned trekkers. The trail is divided into multiple sections, each offering its own unique challenges and beauty.

Section 1: Beedehalli to Kumara Parvatha Peak

The journey to Kumara Parvatha begins at Beedehalli, which is the starting point for the trek. This section covers approximately 7-8 kilometers and takes you through dense forests, rocky paths, and grasslands. The trail from Beedehalli to the Kumara Parvatha Peak is steep and strenuous, requiring both endurance and stamina.

As you ascend, the lush greenery surrounding the trail gradually opens up to panoramic views of the Western Ghats. Along the way, you will pass through various terrains, including thick forest patches and open grassy hills. The forest area is dense and humid, but as you climb higher, the landscape becomes more open, offering breathtaking views of the distant mountains and valleys. The journey to the peak is both physically demanding and rewarding, with the summit standing tall at an altitude of 1,712 meters (5,620 feet) above sea level.

Reaching the peak is a moment of triumph. The summit offers a 360-degree view of the Western Ghats, with mist-covered mountains stretching as far as the eye can see. The cool breeze and the sense of accomplishment make this one of the most memorable parts of the trek.

Section 2: Kumara Parvatha to Shesha Parvatha

From the Kumara Parvatha summit, the descent towards Shesha Parvatha begins. The distance between the two peaks is roughly 1 kilometer, and this section is relatively easier than the climb to the main peak. However, the trail remains rocky and uneven, so caution is still necessary.

Shesha Parvatha, often mistaken for the main summit due to its prominence, stands as a beautiful extension of the Kumara Parvatha range. The trail from Kumara Parvatha to Shesha Parvatha offers an excellent vantage point for observing the valley below and the hills beyond. The grasslands here are vast, and the rocky outcrops create stunning photographic opportunities. It’s a great spot to rest and take in the views before continuing the journey downward.

Section 3: Shesha Parvatha to Bhatrumane

The next leg of the trek is from Shesha Parvatha to Bhatrumane, a famous pit stop for trekkers. The distance between the two is approximately 4 kilometers. This section is a descent, but it is still challenging due to the rocky terrain and steep slopes.

As you make your way down, the trail moves through more grasslands and forested sections, eventually leading to the well-known resting place of Bhatrumane. This location is a favorite among trekkers because it offers a place to rest, eat, and refresh before completing the trek. The hospitable environment, along with the simple meals provided here, makes Bhatrumane a comforting stop after the long descent.

Section 4: Bhatrumane to Kukke Subramanya

The final section of the trek takes you from Bhatrumane to Kukke Subramanya, covering a distance of approximately 7 kilometers. This part of the trail is a gradual descent, passing through dense forests and rocky paths.

The forest cover here is dense, and the trail can become slippery, especially during the monsoon season. However, the cool forest environment is a welcome respite from the harsh sun you experience during earlier parts of the trek. As you approach Kukke Subramanya, you will start hearing the sounds of the town, signaling the end of the trek.

Reaching Kukke Subramanya town marks the end of the 22 kilometer trek, which takes anywhere between 10 to 12 hours to complete, depending on the pace and weather conditions. The famous Kukke Subramanya temple is a great place to visit after completing the trek, adding a spiritual touch to an already enriching experience.

Each section of the Kumara Parvatha trek offers unique challenges and scenic beauty, making it one of the most sought-after trekking destinations in South India.

Day 2 is designed to be a slower-paced yet equally enriching experience. After a restful night at the homestay, the day begins with an excursion to a nearby waterfall. Depending on the season, the water levels can vary, but the sight and sound of cascading water is always a refreshing start to the day. The waterfall is tucked away in nature, providing a peaceful retreat where you can soak in the cool waters and enjoy the serenity of the surroundings.

The next stop is the stunning Mallali Falls, located in the foothills of the Pushpagiri Mountains. This picturesque waterfall is a sight to behold, with water gushing down a height of 200 feet, creating a spectacle that draws travellers and photographers alike. The surrounding landscape, with its dense forests and rocky terrain, adds to the dramatic beauty of the falls. You’ll spend time here, capturing memories or simply basking in the natural splendour.

Following this, the journey continues to the serene Namdroling Monastery (Golden Temple), one of the largest Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in India. Known for its towering golden statues, vibrant Tibetan architecture, and peaceful ambience, the monastery offers a calm and spiritual contrast to the adventure, making it a perfect stop to slow down, reflect, and soak in the culture and tranquility of the region. Lunch will be a self-sponsored meal at a local eatery, giving you a chance to sample regional cuisine and relax. Afterward, you’ll have some time to explore the town and perhaps pick up some local souvenirs before heading back on the road.

The return journey to Bangalore offers a reflective end to the two-day adventure. The winding roads through the Western Ghats, the memories of the trek, the sights of cascading waterfalls, and the historical significance of the fort all combine to create an unforgettable experience. You’ll arrive in Bangalore by approximately 11:00 PM, with a collection of stories, pictures, and experiences that will stay with you long after the trip ends.

This day strikes the perfect balance between nature, history, and cultural exploration, ensuring that every moment is filled with new sights and meaningful experiences.
