Rameshwaram is one of the holiest sites in Hinduism, associated with both Vaishnavas and Shaivas. It is said that Lord Rama, after defeating Ravana, had established the Ramanathaswamy Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, asking his forgiveness for having killed one of his most dedicated devotees. Today, the town is not just famous for being home to one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, but also holds a special place from a historical perspective. Dhanushkodi, the Ghost Town, named so after 1964, was hit by the worst storm India has ever seen. This is a town which redefines the term ‘isolated’, being cut off from the rest of the world. Mythologically, Dhanushkodi is said to be the town from where Lord Rama started to build the Ram Setu in order to go to Lanka to save his wife, Sita. Thus, one can see the historical stones preserved in the town.
Visiting Rameshwaram and Dhanushkodi feels like a walk through spirituality and history, altogether.
