About The Trip

Tucked away from the noise of crowded hill stations and commercial viewpoints, Hulukudi Betta remains one of those rare places where history, mythology, and nature quietly coexist. Lesser known and beautifully untouched, this ancient hill is home to centuries-old temples and fortifications that whisper stories of the past with every step you take.

At the summit stand two temples — one dedicated to Lord Shiva, believed to have been developed during the Chola period between the 11th and 13th centuries, and an even older shrine devoted to Lord Veerabhadra. Local legends speak of divine rivalries and folklore that give the hill a mystical aura, making the climb more than just a physical journey.

Our trail begins at the Shri Hulukudi Veerabhadraswamy Temple and gradually winds its way upward through rocky paths and open landscapes. As you ascend in the early hours, the sky slowly shifts from deep blue to shades of gold. And when the sun finally rises above the horizon, bathing the ancient stones in warm light, you realize this isn’t just another trek — it’s a quiet conversation between the past and the present.

Sunrise at Hulukudi Betta is not about conquering a peak. It’s about experiencing stillness, history, and perspective — the unfiltered way.

Detail Itinerary

Details

We arrive at the base of Hulukudi Betta while it’s still dark, the world around us quiet and unhurried. For a few minutes, everyone stays in the vehicle — stretching, adjusting backpacks, tying shoelaces a little tighter. There’s a soft excitement in the air, the kind that only comes before a sunrise climb.

Around 5:00 AM, we begin the trek from near the Shri Hulukudi Veerabhadraswamy Temple. The trail gradually rises over rocky terrain, simple yet steady enough to wake you up. Phone torches and headlamps light the path as we walk under a sky slowly shifting from deep blue to pale grey. Conversations are hushed, footsteps rhythmic, breaths visible in the cool morning air.

As we climb higher, the horizon begins to glow. By the time we reach the top, streaks of orange and gold start cutting through the sky. The ancient temples and old fort structures stand quietly at the summit, silhouetted against the first light of the day. There’s something grounding about watching the sun rise here — no noise, no rush, just open landscapes and a feeling of stillness that stays with you.

We spend time exploring the top, walking around the centuries-old temple structures and taking in the sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. Some pause for photos, some sit in silence, and some simply let the morning settle in.

Once the sun climbs a little higher, we begin our descent. The trail feels different in daylight — clearer, warmer, familiar. Back at the base, the sense of accomplishment is simple but satisfying.

On the way back, we stop for breakfast at a local eatery. Hot idlis, crispy dosas, strong filter coffee — nothing feels better after a morning climb. Laughter grows louder now, stories from the trek replayed over plates of food.

We then continue our drive back to Bengaluru, expecting to reach by around 12:00 PM. It’s a half-day escape that feels far longer — a sunrise, a bit of history, and a quiet reminder of how refreshing it is to step away from routine, even if only for a few hours.
