Starts From
Most people think India's rainforests only exist in the Northeast or the Andamans. Agumbe exists to prove them wrong.
Known as the Cherrapunji of South India, this hidden gem in Karnataka's Shivamogga district is one of the wettest, wildest, and most biodiverse corners of the Western Ghats — and it sits just 380 km from Bangalore. The Agumbe Exploration weekend trip is your chance to step into a UNESCO World Heritage landscape that most people scroll past without a second glance.
This isn't just a nature trip. It's a two-day immersion into everything Agumbe quietly holds — a trek through dense rainforest to the ancient ruins of the 9th-century Kavaledurga Fort, a visit to Kuvempu Kavi Mane where Karnataka's beloved poet once lived, golden-hour views from Agumbe Sunset Point over the Arabian Sea, the thunder of Koodluteertha Falls, and the stillness of the sacred Sringeri Temple on the banks of the Tunga river.
And somewhere in between, if you're lucky — a glimpse of the King Cobra, Agumbe's most famous resident.
No crowds. No noise. Just you, the rainforest, and a weekend that actually feels like an escape. Plan The Unplanned will take you there.

You'll roll into the homestay in the early hours, a little groggy from the overnight journey but already breathing in air that smells nothing like Bangalore. Freshen up, sit down for breakfast, and let the morning do its thing.
The first half of the day belongs to Kavaledurga Fort. You trek up through dense rainforest — the kind where the trees close in and the city feels very, very far away. At the top, 9th-century ruins sit quietly against a backdrop of endless Western Ghats. It's the sort of place that makes you wonder how something this old and this beautiful managed to stay so unknown. Lunch up here, with nothing but jungle and open skies around you.
On the way back down, the day slows down in the best way. A visit to Kuvempu Kavi Mane & Kavi Shaila — the home of one of Karnataka's most beloved poets. It's not a loud or flashy stop. But something about standing where someone created so much, surrounded by this much nature, tends to stay with you.
If the timing works out, Agumbe Sunset Point wraps the evening up perfectly — the Arabian Sea glowing in the distance, the ghats doing what they do best. Back at the homestay, dinner is ready, and the rainforest takes over from there. Sleep comes easy here.
Breakfast
Details
A slower morning today. Freshen up, have breakfast, and ease into the day — no rush, no alarms.
First stop is Koodluteertha Falls. Tucked away in the forest, this is the kind of waterfall that doesn't make a lot of noise online — which is exactly why it feels so good when you get there. Pristine water, green everywhere, and a quiet that you want to hold onto for as long as possible.
From there, the day takes a spiritual turn. Sringeri Temple, sitting on the banks of the Tunga River, is one of those places that feels genuinely timeless. Established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century, the temple complex carries a calm that's hard to describe — the kind that makes even the most restless traveller stop and breathe for a moment. Take your time here.
Lunch is on you — a good chance to try some local Malnad cooking before hitting the road.
The drive back to Bangalore begins in the afternoon. Conversations from the trip tend to fill the hours easily. You'll roll into the city around 11:30 PM — tired, full, and already thinking about the next one.
